Music Therapy

The tools below have been proven for centuries by many psychologists and scientists to help people learn how to deal with their depression. The sound based, self-help techniques below should be added to your tool box as you attempt to combat and effectively deal with your depression.  If used daily, the music therapy and toning/humming exercises listed below will most assuredly help you cope with your depression.

Using Toning and Humming to Help Deal with Depression and Other Unpleasant, Intrusive Feelings

Don Campbell, founder of the Institute of Music, Health and Education, has developed a powerful tool called, The Mozart Effect. The Mozart Effect is the process whereby you use your own voice to boost/elevate mood and increase/strengthen memory.

Don Campbell has discovered that singing, humming and self-talk all have very powerful therapeutic capabilities.  Though, the most powerful vocalization technique we can use, he has discovered, is toning.  Toning is the process whereby we make sounds using elongated vowels for long periods of time; usually 3-7 minutes.  Campbell explains that when people tone on a routine basis for 3-7 minutes a day or when needed, “I have witnessed thousands of people relax into their voices, become more centered in their bodies, release fear and other emotions and free themselves from physical pain…I have seen many people apply toning in practical ways, from relaxing before attest, to eliminating headaches…Toning balances brain waves, deepens the breath, reduces the heart rate and imparts a general sense of wellbeing.”

According to Campbell’s Mozart Effect, the following sounds, when used daily, effectively deal with depression and other intrusive feelings:

Music Therapy
Music has been used as a therapy for depression for centuries. The pulse of a piece of music can directly affect and mobilize neurotransmitters and hormones responsible for how we are feeling. In particular, Boroque music played at about 60 beats per minute has been proven to boost our emotional arousal (increase serotonin) and keep it at a non-depressed state for hours at a time.   The nine selections below are Boroque played at 60 BPM. Simply hit the play button, close our eyes, take deep breaths and listen as the music fills your mind and helps you feel less depressed.  Thoughts will creep into your mind.  Do not ignore them but don't dwell on them.   Briefly accept them and move on to continuing to listen as the music lifts your depression.
